NADA DEBS' LUNAR GARDEN Dubai 2022
A garden inspired by cosmic architecture, lunar phases and sea beds — and by its commissioner, designer Nada Debs.
Nada, who holds appreciation for brick as a material, had lifted the existing interlock that paved her garden and begun to play with these, building the low, curved, latticed walls that remain in the garden today. They were the only feature present in an otherwise bare space when we came together to envisage what it could become. In recalling the cosmic architecture of Jantar Mantar, in both Delhi and Jaipur, places of inspiration to Studio Zain Masud—these arcs served as the inspiration for the crescent, waxing and waning circular forms that appear across the chapters of the garden. Reclaiming these bricks was not only the least wasteful, most sustainable option for us; they allowed us to retain the accrued history of the villa. The footsteps that came before us. Distinct character between these chapters, as well as a continuity of visual language was particularly important in this garden as it wraps around the villa and can be interpreted all at once, and as a whole, from its main living space.
